Murcia day trip: the baroque cathedral, tapas squares and the Casino, 50 minutes from the coast

Murcia is a city most beach visitors skip, which is why its squares are full of locals eating tapas rather than tourists. Fifty minutes inland, with a cathedral facade that stops you on the pavement, it is the easiest city day from the villa.

In short

  • 50 minutes on the AP-7 and A-30; park under the Plaza de Belluga or at the Jardín del Malecón.
  • Cathedral: Gothic inside, the great baroque facade outside; climb the tower.
  • The Real Casino: a 19th-century members’ club you can tour, with a Moorish patio and a ballroom.
  • Tapas at Plaza de las Flores and Plaza Santa Catalina; marinera and zarangollo are the local bites.

The city in a day

  1. Plaza del Cardenal Belluga and the cathedral: 14th-century Gothic with the swirling 18th-century facade; the bell tower climb has the view over the huerta.
  2. Real Casino on Calle Trapería: a riot of styles, from the Arab patio to the English library and the ladies’ powder room painted with angels. Small entry fee.
  3. Tapas around Plaza de las Flores: a marinera (Russian salad on a bread ring with an anchovy), paparajotes (lemon leaves in batter) for pudding.
  4. Museo Salzillo for the baroque Holy Week sculptures and the enormous nativity.
  5. Malecón river walk and gardens, then shopping on Gran Vía and the Trapería.

Detours

On the way home, the Ricote Valley north of the city is a green ribbon of orchards and villages along the Segura, with the thermal spa at Archena; or take the coast road back via the Mar Menor. In summer Murcia is one of the hottest cities in Spain; go early, lunch long, and leave at 17:00.
