Lo Pagán mud baths: how it works, where to park and what to bring (25 minutes from the villa)

At the top of the Mar Menor a row of salt pans so saline you float, with black mud on the bottom that people have smeared on themselves for a century. It is free, slightly ridiculous and great fun. 25 minutes from the villa.

In short

  • Las Charcas, Lo Pagán, San Pedro del Pinatar: 25 minutes south on the AP-7 or N-332.
  • Free, open-air, no changing rooms. Park by the Molino de Quintín windmill or the beach car parks.
  • Routine: scoop mud, cover yourself, let it dry in the sun 20 minutes, float in the salt water, rinse at the beach showers.
  • Go in the morning before the heat, or late afternoon; take an old towel and flip-flops you do not love.

The routine

  1. Walk the boardwalk from the car park to the first charca (pan). The water is shallow and warm, the bottom is soft black mud.
  2. Scoop mud from the edge and cover everything you want to cover. Faces are fine; keep it out of eyes.
  3. Stand or sit in the sun until it dries and cracks, 15 to 30 minutes. This is the moment for photographs.
  4. Walk in and float. The water is several times saltier than the sea; you cannot sink.
  5. Rinse under the showers at the beach fifty metres away, then swim in the Mar Menor to finish.

Practical

Everything is free and unstaffed. There are no lockers, so leave valuables in the car and take a cheap bag. Old swimwear: the mud stains. Flip-flops for the crystallised salt edges. Go before 11:00 in summer, when it is both cooler and quieter, or in the golden hour. The mud is said to help skin and joints; whether or not it does, you will feel very smooth afterwards.

Make a day of it

The boardwalk continues through the Salinas de San Pedro natural park, with flamingos feeding in the pans a few metres away and the windmills on the skyline. Lo Pagán village has a long beach on the lagoon, calm and warm for small children, and seafront restaurants doing Mar Menor prawns and caldero. Twenty minutes further south is the rest of the Mar Menor.

Back by the pool for sunset. Casa Fragata is a private pool villa at Punta Prima, 280 m from the beach, on the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa border. Check availability.
