Cabo Roig: the strip, the marina, Cala Capitán and the clifftop promenade

Cabo Roig is a small headland with a 16th-century watchtower, a marina tucked under it, a Blue Flag beach either side, and a strip of bars and restaurants that gives the Orihuela Costa its nightlife. Eight minutes from the villa.

In short

  • Playa de Cabo Roig (La Caleta): sheltered Blue Flag beach beneath the tower and marina.
  • Cala Capitán, just north: the best snorkelling cove on the coast.
  • The strip (Calle Nazario Ortiz Sánchez and around): Irish bars, Sunday roasts, live music, restaurants.
  • Thursday morning market behind the strip. Marina restaurant for a long lunch with a view.

Beach, cove and marina

The main beach sits in a bay below the tower, sand with a gentle slope, lifeguards, showers and a beach bar, and gets calm water in most winds. Round the point is the marina, with the restaurant on the breakwater, boat trips and dive school in summer. North along the path is Cala Capitán, a rock-shelved cove where the snorkelling is genuinely good; south, the clifftop promenade continues towards Campoamor.

The strip

A few hundred metres of bars and restaurants on the road above the marina: Irish pubs with live music and sport, British breakfasts, Indian and Chinese, a couple of good Spanish grills and a cocktail terrace or two. It is the social centre of the Orihuela Costa for the international community and gets lively from Thursday to Sunday, loud in August, friendly all year. Not Spanish, not pretending to be.

Thursday market and practical

The Thursday morning market sets up on the open ground behind the strip: clothes, leather, fruit and plants, smaller than Torrevieja’s Friday market and easier to park for. Cabo Roig is 8 minutes from Punta Prima by car on the N-332 or a 90-minute coastal walk; the bus along the N-332 stops at the strip.
