The habaneras

Salt ships sailed from Torrevieja to Cuba and came back with songs. The habanera, slow and sentimental, became the town’s anthem; the International Contest of Habaneras and Polyphony has run since 1955 and is the one event worth planning around. Tickets are cheap, the venue is open-air by the old salt stores, and the free rehearsal days are magical.

Practical

Festival weeks fill restaurants and parking in the centre; from the villa, come in by bus or park at Playa de los Náufragos and walk the promenade. August is the busiest month for everything. Fireworks are frequent all summer; light sleepers, bring earplugs.

Staying at Casa Fragata? Torrevieja marina is 12 minutes by car from the villa, and Punta Prima beach is four minutes on foot. Check availability.
Staying nearby? Casa Fragata is a private pool villa at Punta Prima, 280 metres from the beach, between Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa. Check availability or see the villa.
