Torrevieja in winter: 17 °C afternoons, Christmas lights, and everything that stays open

Winter is when Torrevieja is most itself: locals back on the promenade, empty beaches for walking, golf at its best, and lunch outside in the sun most days. It is also when a villa with heating and a walkable supermarket matters.

In short

  • December and January: highs around 17 °C, lows about 7 °C, more sun than rain. February warms up.
  • Nearly everything stays open: supermarkets, pharmacies, markets, golf, most restaurants. Some beach bars close.
  • Christmas lights, the Three Kings parade, Carnival in February.
  • Sea too cold for most; the walks, the lagoons and the day trips are at their best.

The weather, honestly

Expect bright days with a cool edge. In the sun at lunchtime it feels like 20 °C and you will eat outside; in the shade and after dark you need a jacket. Rain comes a few days a month, often in one short storm. Wind is the thing that spoils a day more than cold. Full numbers in the month-by-month weather guide.

What is open

Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa have a large year-round population, so winter is not a shut-down. Supermarkets, markets, pharmacies, the hospital, La Zenia Boulevard, the marina restaurants and the pubs all run as normal. Golf courses are in peak season. What closes: some chiringuitos and seasonal beach restaurants, the water parks, and the tourist boats to Tabarca except on occasional fine weekends.

Christmas and New Year

The lights go up in early December along the main streets and the seafront, with nativity scenes, a Christmas market and a programme of concerts. New Year’s Eve is on the square by the church with the twelve grapes at midnight. The Three Kings parade on 5 January is the children’s highlight. Restaurants are open on Christmas Day with set menus; book.

What to do

  • Walk the whole coast: Punta Prima to the marina, or La Mata to Cabo Cervera, without the summer heat.
  • Flamingos are closest to the paths at the lagoons in winter.
  • Day trips to Orihuela, Elche, Alicante, Cartagena and Murcia are better in cool weather.
  • Golf: Villamartín, Las Colinas, Campoamor, all 8 to 15 minutes from the villa.
  • Markets every day of the week, with no crush.
