Torrevieja practical guide: supermarkets, pharmacies, opening hours, Sundays, cash and health care

The questions that come up on day one, answered from the villa’s front gate: where to shop, what is open on Sunday, where the pharmacy is, and what to do if someone is ill.

Hours vary with season; Sunday opening is common on the coast in summer and rare inland. Bakeries open Sunday mornings everywhere.

Pharmacies and health

Spanish pharmacies (green cross) are the first stop for anything minor; pharmacists can advise and sell many medicines over the counter. Farmacia Punta Prima on Avenida de la Murada is seven minutes from the villa; every pharmacy door lists the nearest on night duty (farmacia de guardia). For a doctor, private clinics in Torrevieja and La Zenia see tourists quickly for a fee, and travel insurance or the EHIC/GHIC covers the public Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja, where English is spoken. Emergencies: 112, free from any phone, with English operators.

Money, hours and the rest

  • Cash: cards work almost everywhere; markets and some beach bars want cash. Use bank ATMs and decline the machine’s own currency conversion.
  • Siesta: small shops close 14:00 to 17:00; supermarkets and the Boulevard do not.
  • Meals: lunch 14:00–16:00, dinner from 21:00. Children are welcome everywhere at any hour.
  • Tipping: round up or leave a euro or two; service is included.
  • Water: safe but salty from the tap; bottled water is cheap.
  • Plugs: type F two-pin, 230 V; UK visitors need an adapter.
  • Bank holidays: 1 Jan, 6 Jan, Easter Friday, 1 May, 15 Aug, 12 Oct, 1 Nov, 6 and 8 Dec, 25 Dec, plus regional and local days; supermarkets often open mornings.
  • Rubbish: street containers, colour-coded for recycling. Bags under the villa’s kitchen sink.
